Health & Safety Charter
Sharing common goals, the member companies of the Major Contractors Group are committed to operating construction sites that provide a working environment, which is both safe and free from health hazards for all stakeholders within the construction industry and for members of the public.
CDM 2007 The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations are now before Parliament, anticipated to come into force on 6 April 2007. Click here for more information including the Principal Contractor guidance notes (pdf).
MCG Health & Safety Strategy
MCG member companies working with their supply chains will commit to:
-
Leading behavioural change on all our sites to eliminate accidents and incidence of ill health
-
-
An effective site specific induction process before anyone is allowed to work on site
-
All workers being consulted on health and safety matters in a way that engages them in improving health and safety
-
Exchanging best practice and lessons learnt in order to establish the root cause of incidents
-
Raising awareness and insisting on the highest standards of PPE
-
Publishing an annual report of progress made against the commitments of this Charter
-
Reducing the incidence rate of work related ill health in the construction industry by health surveillance, education, rehabilitation and reducing exposure. Companies will monitor progress by measuring the total number of days lost due to sickness absence.
The MCG has also produced an Accepted Records Scheme for individuals working on members’ sites. MCG has prepared a set of Pre-Qualification Guidelines for Subcontractors.
MCG companies have also agreed an Occupational Health Strategy for their own direct employees covered by the MCG Health & Safety Strategy.
The Occupational Health Strategy includes:
- health assessment for workers exposed to Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVs), Dermatitis, Muscular Skeletal Disorders (MSDs) and Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)
- rehabilitation of workers with HAVs, dermatitis, MSDs and NIHL
- monitoring of sickness and injury absences
- occupational health toolbox talks and other promotional materials to improve the understanding of health risks
- toolbox talks on all MCG projects
- self-assessment forms for HAVs, dermatitis, MSDs and NIHL.
Occupational Health Guidelines have been developed to support the strategy.
